Church 101
It strikes me that Jesus called 12 guys to be “with him.” (Mark 3:14). Not, “hey, come to temple (or church) with me.” I was taught growing up that in order to be a Christian you had to go to church. But the Bible clearly teaches that the church is not a building. It’s not even a place you go. It’s something you are, collectively with other people- together, the people of God. Wherever the church is, Christ is present with them.
As I look back, is it any wonder why I had such a distorted view of church? Was I really turning my back on God because I didn’t want to go “to church”? This has massive ramifications for how we live as people of faith, and where we commit our resources. Consider this…
- Do we choose to be part of the church to be with Him?
- Do we even go to church to be the church with others?
- Whose benefit are we going to church for anyway?
- Do those outside the church see a true picture of the church by how we do church?
This seems to be like church 101, but why is it not the basis for how we live and serve as “the church?” How can we show others the love that God has for us if we are confused about what church really is? And what does this mean for the place we currently “go to?” Is this just a big stinky can of worms, or have we missed it by that much?
More to follow…
